Bioreactors as Additive Manufacturing Environments

After many years of research, design, and engineering, I finally had a chance to reflect on our work at Biorealize. Bioreactors as Additive Manufacturing has just been published by 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing and discusses two of our products, the Microbial Design Studio and B | Reactor, with case studies in biomaterials design. At Biorealize, our goal was always to lower the barriers to working with biology and to help people develop new relationships with bacteria, yeast, and algae.

This was also the last publication I wrote while on leave but still a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania. Special thanks to Karen Hogan, my co-founder, who poured her heart and soul into Biorealize between 2015 and 2022. Mike Hogan, Ricky Solorzano, and many other team members, investors, and mentors were also key in making this a reality.

Weissella

I am very pleased that the Myco Magazine has re-printed my essay Weissella for their inaugural issue. This text is from the Museum of Exhalation, the publication I edited as part of my contribution to the 17th Istanbul Biennial. Many thanks to Katya Bloomberg for the invite.

I am still looking for a publisher who would re-print and circulate Museum of Exhalation with new contributions. Please let me know if you have any leads.

New Publication

I am really happy to participate in Post—Normal Design: Emergent approaches towards plural worlds, a volume edited by Alastair Fuad-Luke for the Porto Design Biennial. The essay is called “Where Do Gardens Come From?” This text is also the basis of the video essay with the same title. More information here.

Foundry Engineering at Ecovative

I wrote a blog post explaining our work as the Foundry Engineering team at Ecovative. It has been a great experience to work with such a talented group to build a Mycelium Biomaterial Research Platform.
